Reducing waste to landfill by recycling and re-using material will help to restore and protect our environment.

The volume of recyclable material collected from NAWMA's Council areas has steadily increased in recent years as growing numbers of residents embrace the principles of responsible waste and resource management.

In 2015-16, the kerbside collection contractor, SUEZ Environnement, delivered to NAWMA a total of 20,790 tonnes of recyclables from Gawler, Playford and Salisbury Councils. An additional 6,466 tonnes of recyclable material has been sourced from client or rural Councils.

Over the past few years it has been observed that tonnages recieved for recycling have reduced slightly in weight per household, two of the contributing factors are:

    1. due to the reduction in size of the annual telephone books delivered, and

    2. residents preferring to read their news on line rather than recieving the daily Advertiser.

Even with these fact considered during this period there was still around 16,300 tonnes of mixed paper products either exported or forwarded to mills for processing.

Kerbside collected recycling material - including paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, steel and aluminium - is sorted at NAWMA's Material Recovery Facility at Edinburgh North.

Once sorted, the materials are ready to be processed for remanufacture into new products. You can help by ensuring the contents of your yellow top bin are clean and ready for sorting.

All plastics can be recycled, but some are currently not suitable for sorting in NAWMA's process. They include plastic lids that are too small to be sorted individually.

If you wish to recycle your plastic lids, put them in a plastic bottle with the bottle top attached. When full place the bottle in the recycling bin and NAWMA can sort them.

To work out whether your plastic container goes in the recyclables bin, just remember this little rhyme:

Pick me up, give me a squeeze

If I still look the same, recycle me please!

Pick me up, give me a squeeze

If I crack and split, NAWMA can't sort bits!
